Dad 1940-2007

A Dad is someone special
who is sure to understand,
someone who is interested in all the things you've planned.

He's a good friend and companion,
a guide and teacher, too,
someone who shares your hopes and dreams,
and likes to laugh with you---

And Dad, you're all of this---
and more,
and that's one reason why---
you're someone who grows dearer
with each day that passes by! --Unknown

This inscription was on a plaque I gave to my father when he retired and moved back home to Lincoln back in 1998-I was 26 at the time. He had this plaque hung on the wall in his room ever since. I took it down and I found a note taped to the back. A note I'd written and that he'd kept all this time and I didn't know it.

This is what I wrote...

Dad,

Now, seems like the right time to give you this gift. I want to thank you for everything you taught me, even when the lessons were hard and it seemed like I wasn't paying attention. I am very grateful that you didn't give up on me.

I am also grateful that I am getting to know you as a father and a friend.

Love, Laurie

There were rough years between us for a long time, but we got through and true to my note to him- I got to know him very well.

He was very intelligent, caring and capable of deep compassion and unconditional love at times when I didn't deserve it and would often push it away.

Indeed, he was a good father and a good friend.

Good-bye, Pop. I'll miss you.
