Portrailts 2/4-Dad & Red

There's a lot of Dad's things around the house yet. His BB gun still sits by the back door where he would take shots at blackbirds and squirrels who were trying to get to the feed in his birdfeeders.

I remember lots of times when I'd come home from work and he would tell me how he shot a squirrel out the tree in our backyard.

There was one time, we both were standing at the screen door and a gracklin was on one of the feeders. Dad grabbed his BB gun and took a shot.

I said, "Screen's closed." Another shot of compressed air went off next to me. I said again, "Screen's closed." Once more, a BB blasted its way outside. Finally, I just reached out and slid the door open.

Only then did I get Dad's attention. He claimed he didn't hear me say anything, but alas the damage was done. There were three small holes where the BB's forced their way through the screen.

But my strongest memory about Dad and his BB gun is a story he told from when he was a young boy. When he had his first BB gun, he wanted to know how fast the BB's shot out of the barrel. So he placed his index finger over the barrel and fired.

Well, he got his answer...BB's move pretty darn fast! Faster than little boys who have their fingers over BB gun barrels anyways. He said that the perfectly round blood blister disappeared after a few days.
